The town of Oswestry owes its name to King Oswald of Northumbria, one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon kings of the seventh century A.D. A Christian king and a brave warrior, in A.D. 642 Oswald was defeated by the pagan King Penda of Mercia at a site close to the present town of Oswestry. According to legend, an eagle carried his arm away from the battlefield and dropped it, causing a natural well to spring forth where it fell, which is still known today as Oswald's Well.
